 ITCRA BACKS NEW MIGRATION PROGRAM

ITCRA has met with Senator Chris Evans, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, to provide advice in respect to proposed changes to the 2008-09 Skilled Migration Program. The meeting, which was attended by ITCRA Executive Director Norman Lacy, took place in Melbourne on 20 January.

The Minister outlined the Government’s intention to implement a number of measures designed to ensure that the 2008-09 Skilled Migration Program is driven by the needs of industry and targeted skills in critical need across a number of sectors.

Mr Lacy said that ITCRA supported the general approach that the Government had adopted and welcomed the new measures. He expressed concern that the accuracy of the Critical Skills List (CSL) was the critical element for the success of the plan.

“If the CSL is not accurate - as the MODL has turned out to be – the Government was at risk of having immigrants filling the jobs of qualified and experienced Australian citizens and the program failing to meet the skill requirements of the Australian workforce.”

“Unless the CSL is based on the supply and demand information available to the Government from the SkillsMatch system it will be at risk as far as skilled ICT professional immigrants are concerned”, he said.
